For the first time we turned the Christmas lights “switch on” event into a Christmas Fair in the Mechanics. The event was a great success, with at times queues forming to get in. There were free craft workshops, craft and gift stalls, tombola, Santa’s grotto, a raffle and refreshements.

Entertainment was provided by -

2pm – Storytellers.
2.45pm – Belly dancers.
3.30pm – Bernadette Heys’ dancing school.
4.15pm – Junior school choir.
5.00pm – Infant and Nursery school choir.

The switch on regulars were also there for the crowds outside – The Thieving Magpies, Marsden’s Junior Band, Unity Choir, Jack Frost and the Frosties as well as Father Christmas on his sleigh.

Thanks to Enjoy Photography for the photos.

The following four lights entries were made up. Congratulations to Phil, Tiffany Clarke, Caden Thomas Phillips and S Farmer for their designs. Thanks to all for entering.

Here are the 63 entries we received for the lights competition. Our favorites will be made up in the coming month.

We are asking people to contribute their designs for Christmas lighting features as many of the old ones didn’t survive last winter.

Either download the entry form below and draw your design on there, or email an image file with your design to us.

As well as designing the frames you are welcome to get involved in building the designs, let us know if you would like to help.

We put the lights up on the first weekend at Christmas so in order to get the materials and frames assembled entries have to be in before the end of October.

Here are some previous designs made up -

Other previous christmas frames can be found here

We will upload further booklets we find. If you have a document you would like scanning and uploading, please contact us

The christmas lights once again looked lovely. There were two new features this year –

1) An LED replacement for ‘Geoffs Boudoir’. The old lights that hung over the Mechanic’s portico had reached the end of their life and were replaced with energy saving LEDs.

2) After 2009′s prototype we comissioned a reusable aluminium set of candles for the weir.

Thanks to the Cuckoo’s Nest for their grants covering the cost of these lights and the volunteers who tested and put them up.

There is a track in Marsden that connects Plains lane to Marsden lane, it is known as Moorvale/Green lane and is not currently a designated right a way.  An application has been put to the council by Peak & Northern Footpath Society to get it registered as such.

The track can be seen here

In July 2009, their application scored 6 points on the council’s priority scoring matrix, this was insufficient but there is currently a re-investigation. This investigation will include gathering evidence, whether it is for or against the application. If you use the track can you complete this form and return to:

The 2011 Census takes place on March 27th.  There will be several local jobs available as they employ 35,000 temporary part time and full time people.  From their website we see there is work available in Marsden.
